Kinematics: Quantitative Physics Series Workbook 1 (Quantitative Physics Series; Suggested Grades 4-8)

$19.99

This workbook teaches fundamental physics concepts like kinematics and dynamics to middle-grade students through problem-solving.

Philosophy: Of all the sciences, physics is one of the most intuitive. Yet, we wait a long time, often until junior year in high school, to teach it. Once in high school, many students who would have been fine learning physics concepts at the age of 8, 9, or 10 struggle to comprehend the more mathematical form of the subject. This book series aims to bridge this gap by using an intuitive and quantitative approach to physics. The hope is to instill a love for the subject in young children and empower them to be critical thinkers. Level: The Quantitative Physics Series is written with advanced late elementary school students (grades 4-5) and middle schoolers (grades 6-8) in mind. An early elementary school version of this book for grades k-3 is also forthcoming. Description: This book is neither a textbook nor a workbook; instead, it serves as both simultaneously. It does not adhere to the traditional textbook format; rather, students learn by problem-solving. These problems guide students through carefully crafted questions, fostering deeper conceptual understanding and critical thinking skills. The material is designed to be self-paced, self-taught, and student-centered. I provide explanations and video solutions on my YouTube channel, Physics Literacy for Kids, (@physicsliteracyforkids) for those who require further guidance. The intention is for students to follow the instructions, solve the problems, and utilize the provided solutions with minimal dependence on support from a teacher or parent. For direct instruction, I also offer live, interactive classes over the internet for students (typically ages 7-15 years old) from anywhere in the world. After a month or so, these young students can do high-school-level physics with me. If you are interested, you can sign up for classes at “Physicsliteracyforkids.com”, where you can also check out some recorded videos of my sample classes. Volume: This book is the first volume in the Quantitative Physics Series. Here, I cover the basics of Kinematics, the study of motion, and introduce elements of Dynamics, which is the study of forces. We are laying down the foundation for a much deeper understanding of physics concepts. Topics covered in this volume will also include motion maps, motion graphs, position, displacement, speed, velocity, slopes of the curves, acceleration, and 1D and 2D projectile motion. You will find that a child can do advanced math and physics at a very young age without much trouble! I have empirical evidence for this claim. You can watch a sample of my recorded classes at “Physicsliteracyforkids.com”, where you can find students as young as 7 doing advanced physics. Solutions: A complete set of solutions are available at the back of the book. Author: Dr. Azadeh Samadani has taught physics for more than 20 years. She has been a faculty at Brandeis University, a postdoctoral researcher at MIT, and a faculty at The Pingry School. She has a Ph.D. in physics and has numerous publications in the fields of Condensed Matter Physics and Biophysics. She founded “Physics Literacy for Kids” in 2022 and has since been passionately teaching physics to children from all around the world. Nothing interests her more than seeing sparks of curiosity in the eyes of young ones, where the world is full of wonder and learning is wonderful.
