Review Children practice their reading and phonics skills as they partake in this adventure to find the Land Where The Lions Roam Free. Joined by Reader Rabbit and Sam the Lion, kids find a series of activities that teach and reinforce short and long vowels, consonant blends, vowel combinations, compound words and word families. These activities, once you figure out how to play them, provide solid skill practice. There are many directed activities (e.g. find the word with the ch sound like in lunch) as well as some open-ended areas like poetry writing. Graphics are very nice, and the characters and theme are appealing. The direct instruction provided by narration and animation is also very good. The program is flawed, however, in terms of design. It is not always clear how to get from one place or activity to the next, and some of the activities themselves are unintuitive to play– children (and reviewers!) don’t know what to do. Plan on lending your child a helping hand when they get stuck. Additional program features include printable progress reports and study words, plus a skill practice mode. Note: This program comes bundled with a second CD, Reader Rabbit 2nd Grade Mis-cheese-ious Dreamship Adventures!, which is a previously released, fairly good reading adventure program.
