This project is a creative graphic novel based on selections from Ovid’s Metamorphoses Book III, featuring the stories of Cadmus, Semele, and Echo and Narcissus. Cadmus is the story of a young man exiled by his father, King Agenor, for being unable to take his sister back from Jove. Lost, he asks the god Apollo what he should do, and sets out to found the city of Boeotia while overcoming several obstacles deterring him. The tale of Semele is an unfortunate one. Juno, Jove’s wife, is consumed by jealousy because her husband has been cheating on her with a mortal woman, Semele, and also impregnated her. As a result, Juno tries to exact revenge on Semele by pitting Jove against her. Echo and Narcissus’s narrative is that of unrequited love. Echo, drawn to Narcissus’s handsome looks, wants nothing more than to speak to him. Alas, because of Juno’s curse, all she can say are words spoken to her, which she repeats as an echo. Meanwhile, Narcissus tries to find the source of the voice that has enchanted him. This project required the use of Classical knowledge and artistic endeavors to complete.
