Your high school-aged son or daughter will find this movie-based unit study intriguing and empowering. Created for teens aged 15 plus (based on the recommended viewing age of the movie), this unit study will lead your teen down a fascinating path studying an unpleasant time of history. Movies are an excellent introduction to history which is often depicted in a very dry and dull way through textbooks. This journal acts as a bridge between the movie and factual history, helping to answer the student’s questions often brought up during and after the movie. This journal has been designed to provide a scaffolding for the student to conduct independent inquiry and research into Oskar Schindler and the Holocaust event, using the internet or reference books from the library. The student will engage himself in finding out answers to his Whys, Whats, Hows, Whos, Wheres and Whens. It is not necessary to complete this journal in page order. Students are able to jump into pages of their immediate interest. Many notes and vocabulary pages have been inserted into the journal for the student to record his learning and use them to complete more than 20 research prompts and multimodal activities. The student can complete a few pages a week or use it every day on alternate weeks. Students will be learning: historical knowledge and understanding historical chronology and concepts historical questions and research historical inquiry, analysis and use of sources historical perspectives and interpretations historical explanation and communication geographical information and mapwork intercultural and ethical understanding critical and creative thinking media study (including director and composer biography) communicating through multimodal texts such as music, poetry, comic, visual report, amongst other skills.
