- Millions of years ago tree trunks were buried under several hundred yards of sediment. Over the course of time the wood was replaced by microcrystalline quartz, largely chalcedony and jasper. During the replacement process by silica carried in underground waters, even the most minute details of the woody structure was preserved. Petrified wood is a fossil. It forms when plant material is buried by sediment and protected from decay by oxygen and organisms.
- Petrified wood (from the Greek root petro meaning “rock” or “stone”; literally “wood turned into stone”) is the name given to a special type of fossilized remains of terrestrial vegetation.Petrified wood is fossilized wood with the mineral composition of jasper, chalcedony and, less frequently, opal; it consists of silicon dioxide only. The organic wood is not changed into stone, but only the shape and structural elements of the wood are preserved.
- Elements such as manganese, iron and copper in the water/mud during the petrifaction process give petrified wood a variety of color ranges.
