Product Description MP3 CD Format A Midsummer Night s Dream is one of the most enduringly popular of Shakespeare s plays, and it is not difficult to see why. The layers of comedy coupled with a powerful atmosphere of magic and mystery and a satisfying set of contrasts between city and country, reason and imagination, love and infatuation all add up to a hilarious, beautiful production that showcases Shakespeare s wit and power of imagination. About the Author William Shakespeare (1564-1616), English poet and dramatist of the Elizabethan and early Jacobean period, is the most widely known author in all of English literature and often considered the greatest. He was an active member of a theater company for at least twenty years, during which time he wrote many great plays. Plays were not prized as literature at the time, and Shakespeare was not widely read until the middle of the eighteenth century, when a great upsurge of interest in his works began that continues today.

Product Description A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of Shakespeare’s most beloved creations. The frolicking tale of lovesick young aristocrats, energetic but inept rustics, and mischievous woodland spirits is a staple of stage and screen. In the past, filmed adaptions have emphasized the play’s traditional, Elizabethan qualities. This production however is a fresh and stylish reinvention that takes an entirely different approach. The story takes place in present day Hollywood – a place where glamorous stars, commanding moguls, starving artists and vaulting pretenders all vie to get ahead. Hollywood is sometimes called “The Dream Factory,” and like the world of Shakespeare’s Dream, it’s a place where fantasy and reality collide. In the tradition of Baz Luhrmann’s rapturous reimagining of Romeo + Juliet, this modern vision breathes new life into a classic tale. Combined with a cast of established and emerging stars, as well as a pulsing original soundtrack, the film will appeal to ardent fans of the Bard as well as audiences discovering Shakespeare for the first time. Review If you’re hoping to see a production just like the one that would have been done in 1596, this ain’t it. But Mott’s version is a hell of a good time in its own right. –Roger Ebert Mott’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream” may not have a high bar to reach to be better than average as filmed Shakespearean comedies go. But by any standard, it’s a modest, resourceful and unexpected delight. –Variety

“It’s as if Shakespeare is saying: it is a play after all. It’s only a play” A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a comedy play by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written between 1590 and 1596. It portrays the events surrounding the marriage of the Duke of Athens, Theseus, and Hippolyta. These include the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of six amateur actors (mechanical), who are controlled and manipulated by the fairies who inhabit the forest in which most of the play is set. The play is one of Shakespeare’s most popular works for the stage and is widely performed across the world. The play consists of four interconnecting plots, connected by a celebration of the wedding of Duke Theseus of Athens and the Amazon queen, Hippolyta, which are set simultaneously in the woodland and in the realm of Fairyland, under the light of the moon. A Midsummer Night’s Dream has been produced many times in New York, including several staging’s by the New York Shakespeare Festival at the Delacorte Theatre in Central Park and a production by the Theatre for a New Audience, produced by Joseph Papp at the Public Theater. In 1978, the Riverside Shakespeare Company staged an outdoor production starring Eric Hoffmann as Puck, with Karen Hurley as Titania and Eric Conger as Oberon, directed by company founder Gloria Skurski. A True Classic that Belongs on Every Bookshelf!

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a comedy play by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written between 1590 and 1596. It portrays the events surrounding the marriage of the Duke of Athens, Theseus, and Hippolyta. These include the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of six amateur actors (mechanicals), who are controlled and manipulated by the fairies who inhabit the forest in which most of the play is set. The play consists of four interconnecting plots, connected by a celebration of the wedding of Duke Theseus of Athens and the Amazon queen, Hippolyta, which is set simultaneously in the woodland and in the realm of Fairyland, under the light of the moon. The play opens with Hermia, who is in love with Lysander, resistant to her father Egeus’ demand that she wed Demetrius, whom he has arranged for her to marry. Helena meanwhile pines unrequitedly for Demetrius. Enraged, Egeus invokes an ancient Athenian law before Duke Theseus, whereby a daughter needs to marry a suitor chosen by her father, or else face death. Theseus offers her another choice: lifelong chastity while worshipping the goddess Artemis as a nun. Peter Quince and his fellow players Nick Bottom, Francis Flute, Robin Starveling, Tom Snout, and Snug plan to put on a play for the wedding of the Duke and the Queen, “the most lamentable comedy and most cruel death of Pyramus and Thisbe.” Quince reads the names of characters and bestows them on the players. Nick Bottom, who is playing the main role of Pyramus, is over-enthusiastic and wants to dominate others by suggesting himself for the characters of Thisbe, the Lion, and Pyramus at the same time. He would also rather be a tyrant and recites some lines of Ercles. Bottom is told by Quince that he would do the Lion so terribly as to frighten the duchess and ladies enough for the Duke and Lords to have the players hanged. Quince ends the meeting with “at the Duke’s oak we meet.” The play is one of Shakespeare’s most popular works for the stage and is widely performed across the world.

From the mind of award-winning director JulieTaymor (The Lion King on Broadway, Frida, Titus) comes a Shakespeare adaptation like none other, A Midsummer Night s Dream. Rich with Taymor s trade- mark creativity, this immersive and darkly poetic cinematic experience brings the play s iconic fairies, spells and hallucinatory lovers to life. Filmed at her sold-out stage production with cinematography by Rodrigo Prieto (Argo, Frida) and music by Academy Award-winning composer Elliot Goldenthal (Frida, Heat), the feats of visual imagination are ingenious and plentiful, but beating at the center of the film is an emotionally moving take on the deeper human aspects of Shakespeare s beloved tale.

Choreographed by an artistic genius, George Balanchine, Shakespeare’s comedy of magic and love’s delusions set to the music of Felix Mendelssohn is a guaranteed audience pleaser. The Pacific Northwest Ballet displays all the vitality, brilliance and versatility of its wonderful dancers in this award-winning production of Balanchine’s first original full-length ballet. Filmed in High Definition. Press Reviews “It is a fine company with an enviable reputation and some altogether excellent principal dancers: Lisa Apple’s Helena and Julie Tobiason’s Hermia are particularly fine, and the scene between Titania and Bottom is most affecting. The fairy scenes are imaginatively handled and staged.” (The Penguin Guide) “…lavish…full of colour and brilliant images…Such productions surely guarantee the survival of classical ballet well into the next millennium.” (Morning Star (USA)) “Skirting the stage with razor sharp jetes, Seth Belliston (as Puck) made a terrific impact.” (The Stage) BBC Concert Orchestra; Stewart Kershaw Production Company: Pacific Northwest Ballet Stage Director: Kent Stowell; Francia Russell Choreographer: Georges Balanchine Disc Information Catalogue Number: OA0810D Running Time: 94 minutes Sound: Dolby Surround; Dolby Stereo Aspect Ratio: 16:9 Anamorphic Label: Opus Arte

Jordi Savall has has gone above and beyond for this work. In addition to the music composed by Mendelssohn for orchestra, choir and soloists, this set offers the melodramas with the spoken parts, showing how Shakespeare’s text is enhanced by Mendelson’s music. Also included is an abridged version of the play, allowing you to follow along with the plot. The texts are declaimed and sung in both English (disc one) and German (disc two), since the work was created in Germany. Nevertheless, for those listeners who wish to hear only the music without spoken texts, discs three and four offer the program in a ‘concert version’.
