A Primer in Formal Logic

An introduction to symbolic logic written by a dog! The book is accessible to middle school through college students and beyond. It’s written in a conversational style and is a cross between a text book and a workbook. The introductions to new material are delivered in smalll, crisp chunks, and room is provided for writing answers in the book itself. An innovative “mirrored text” approach is used to provide clear and complete answers to all problems. The Primer provides straightforward but surpisingly complete instruction in propositional logic and its application to set theory and techniques of proof in mathematics. It is based on enrichment lessons developed for an inner-city middle school. It emphasizes the interconnections between literacy and numeracy and the role of mathematics generally, and logic specifically, as a lingua franca across cultures and intellectual disciplines. Finally, why the Dog? The Dog not only has mastered a powerful lingua franca, but also is lingua franca itself! Most importantly, the phrase “lingua franca” will never pass the Dog’s lips.
