As migrant children flooded into cages at our border, the author heard echoes of his own footsteps through a revolution fought so that Mayans could stay home. He recalled the agony of a father atop his son’s whitewashed grave and the vow of a beautiful rebel leader on a volcano to not take one step backward until Mayans were safe. What happened to that father and his people, and to Ana? the author wondered. He returned to Guatemala for the first time since 1985 guided back up the volcano by the daughter Ana abandoned for the revolution.
