The Sweet 100 Tomato, a workhorse in the cherry tomato family, produces beautiful Scarlet-red cherry-sized tomatoes in long clusters, literally by the 100’s. They are a tomato bursting with a sugary flavor that some people refer to as “vine candy” as it is hard to resist these sweet treats straight from the garden. The Sweet 100 tomato plant itself is quite large growing 7-10 feet tall and branching out uncontrollably if not caged and staked properly. The hybrid Super Sweet 100 can be used for snacking fresh from the vine or served fresh in salads and relishes and salsas, but they are also suitable for cooking, freezing and pickling. The variety has a reputation for being overwhelmingly prolific – and versatile, too. Plants produce in a wide variety of climates, which is especially good news for gardeners in hot areas as Sweet 100 is overwhelmingly drought- and heat-tolerant. Place plants 20-30 inches apart in a full sun location. These can be placed in large containers and even hanging baskets, though the plant will only grow to its environment size. Tomatoes need a rich normal well-draining soil and these in particular like watering at least 2 times per week and maybe more as the plant grows larger and produces more fruits. When planting these and all other tomatoes, plant to a soil depth just beneath the first set of leaves. That first set of leaves (called cotyledon-which means the embryonic first leaves) will eventually fall off. Roots will form along the buried stem, establishing a stronger root, thus a stronger plant. Don’t water too late in the evening. You want the plants to dry thoroughly before night. Too many problems with fungus start when you continuously water tomatoes late in the evening. As stated before staking and caging is required as the Sweet 100 can grow huge. Harvest 80 days from seeding, continuing on prolifically until the first frost
