This book is the first English-language study of the life and works of Dietrich Buxtehude, published to coincide with the 350th anniversary of his death. For nearly forty years, from 1668 until his death in 1707, Buxtehude was the organist of St. Mary’s Church, the most prestigious musical position in the Hanseatic city/state of Lubeck. The founder of the German baroque organ compositional style to which J. S. Bach was heir, Buxtehude left a body of organ literature that today constitutes a major element in the contemporary organist’s repertoire. His vocal compositions and sonatas also represent outstanding contributions to their respective genres.
