An exciting collection of poems by Wislawa Szymborska. When Here was published in Poland, reviewers marveled, “How is it that she keeps getting better?” These twenty-seven poems, as rendered by prize-winning translators Clare Cavanagh and Stanislaw Baranczak, are among her greatest ever. Whether writing about her teenage self, microscopic creatures, or the upsides to living on Earth, she remains a virtuoso of form, line, and thought.

From the title poem:

I can’t speak for elsewhere,
but here on Earth we’ve got a fair supply of everything.
Here we manufacture chairs and sorrows,
scissors, tenderness, transistors, violins, teacups, dams, and quips . . .

Like nowhere else, or almost nowhere,
you’re given your own torso here,
equipped with the accessories required
for adding your own children to the rest.
Not to mention arms, legs, and astonished head.

NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE * From one of the great comic innovators, the long-awaited fulfillment of a pioneering comic vision: the story of a corner of a room and of the events that have occurred in that space over the course of hundreds of thousands of years. “A book like this comes along once a decade, if not a century…. I guarantee that you’ll remember exactly where you are, or were, when you first read it.” –Chris Ware, The Guardian “In Here McGuire has introduced a third dimension to the flat page. He can poke holes in the space-time continuum simply by imposing frames that act as transtemporal windows into the larger frame that stands for the provisional now. Here is the comic-book equivalent of a scientific breakthrough. It is also a lovely evocation of the spirit of place, a family drama under the gaze of eternity and a ghost story in which all of us are enlisted to haunt and be haunted in turn.” –The New York Times Book Review With full-color illustrations throughout.

Darlene Young’s Here is a hymn to “this jumblesale world,” a journey into middle-aged motherhood, into empty nesting, into God. While a youngest son is on the cusp of manhood, and a mother who worries if she’s done enough to prepare him for life, God shows up each morning as dance partner and “jerks / his head meaningfully towards the dance floor.” Her response: a “hell yes.” The voice in these poems is often playful and laced with refreshing snark, such as when she says no to addressing God as “Thou” instead of “You” in her prayers. Other times the speaker’s voice is earnest-honest, such as when she considers her heartbreak over her son’s heartbreak: “Either way, / it’s you with your hand outstretched, / longing.” Here is hyper-aware of the moment, ultra-attentive to the now–at the cusp of letting grown children go, noting the body’s slow fumble into age–we’re reminded that all we have is fleeting, temporary, and therefore incredibly precious. We are gently transformed. –Dayna Patterson, author of O Lady, Speak Again
