Hiram was an elf. He wasn’t just any elf. He was a tangram elf. “What’s a tangram elf?” you may ask. This cute book will introduce you to Hiram’s unique and colorful world of tangrams. It explains what it means to be a tangram elf – which seems to surprise even Hiram! It gives a small glimpse into his tangram world showing what he likes. There are the scenes around his neighborhood, the farm, camping, going to school, and even his favorite superheroes, books, and TV shows, some of which seem to be from classic TV. It shows how he likes to spend his time, whether it’s skiing, fixing things, shopping, playing music, or just sitting in his favorite quiet place. Everything in his world is made up of tangrams. There are well over 100 original tangrams in this book, designed by Doug Nufer. Each is shown in color in the story portion. Toward the back of the book they are all repeated as silhouetted puzzles to be solved. At the very end, is a tangram pattern that can be copied or cut out and used to solve the tangrams in the book, or readers can use it to make more of their own. The story pages tell a simple story. At the bottom of each page is a question or statement for young readers to help them think about what they’re reading. For example, when we learn of Hiram’s friends, it asks, “What do you like doing with your friends?” This is the first in a series of tangram storybooks. It introduces Hiram the Tangram Elf who will be a main character in many of the books in the series.
