Bryan Stevenson’s Just Mercy is an increasingly popular text to use in AP English Language and the high school language arts classroom. The questions and prompts are designed to supplement all levels of language arts. The reading questions include general content questions in addition to close reading questions focused on the expectations on the AP English Language Exam, State-wide language arts end of course exams, ACT, and the SAT. Students are asked to examine the language choices made by the author and the effect of specific choices. Analysis includes devices, syntax, diction, organization, etc.Each of the NINE writing prompts correlate with the text and the author’s ideas and the issues contained in the text. Students are not required to read the text to respond to any of the prompts. The prompts include 3 synthesis (DBQ style), 3 rhetorical analysis, and 3 arguments.
