IMPORTANT UPDATE: This is the SECOND EDITION of this lab manual, and The THIRD EDITION of Laboratory Exercises in Invertebrate Zoology by Holyoak is now available at Amazon.com. It is available in hard copy and kindle formats. “Laboratory Exercises in Invertebrate Zoology” is designed to support a one-semester course in invertebrate zoology; it can also support at least in part a course in animal diversity. Though retitled, this is the 2nd edition of this laboratory manual and includes 86 pages of new material, 71 new figures, 46 links to supplemental video material, glossaries at the end of each chapter and more. The goal of this project is to provide an alternative to expensive laboratory materials offered by traditional textbook publishers that is both affordable and up to date. For example, a new copy of the only generally available laboratory manual in invertebrate zoology published by a textbook company now costs over $110/copy. This is just too expensive, especially when that lab manual was published in 2002. Thanks to the Amazon.com/CreateSpace self-publishing service it is now possible to offer this set of exercises at less than one fifth of the cost of the lab manual mentioned above. The first edition of this laboratory manual was published through CreateSpace in 2013 and since that time feedback from students and adopting faculty together with developments in the field spurred development of this second edition. Some of the other changes that appear in the second edition include the following: *Updated and expanded taxonomic information for all groups following “Invertebrates, 3rd edition,” by Brusca, et al., (2016) *Tables listing defining characteristics for major taxa are now included in each chapter*Inclusion of word roots/word meanings for many taxonomic names*A taxonomic index replaces the cumbersome index of the 1st edition *Expansion or improvement of exercises on Microscopy, Cladistics, Siphonophora, Coral, Nematoda, Arachnida, Myriapoda (centipedes and millipedes)*Addition of new exercises on Domain Eukarya (protozoans), Ctenophora (comb jellies), Tardigrada (water bears), Onychophora (velvet worms), Pycnogonida (sea spiders), and Ophiuroidia (brittle stars) Constructive feedback or suggestions for improvement of these exercises are gladly received.
