Review I have about 5 years of salsa dance experience, but I’ve never formally taken any bachata classes. I’ve just never heard of anyone teaching it in my area of the globe. These DVDs have been great for me to expand my bachata steps. (I’ve only really known the side to side basic and turning side to side.) I really recommend these DVDs. The price might seem like a lot but considering the fact that a single 45 minute private dance lesson goes for $85 at a dance school, these DVDs are sooo worth it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. The production quality is excellent. Instructions are clear for both leaders and followers. The instructors demonstrate the moves from different angles so you can see what going on with the arms and legs from the other viewpoint. Not only do they teach dance moves, but also introduce some bachata history and tips on proper etiquette at dance clubs. (For example, don’t refuse a dance with someone, and then accept to dance with a different person during the same song!) –Andy the Fifth – Amazon.com Review “An Amazing and Sexy Dance”. I had never heard of Bachata before receiving this DVD for review (am I the only one?), so I searched for videos on YouTube. I was absolutely blown away by some of the dancers I saw, so I couldn’t wait to get some instruction. The instructors in this video are Jesus and Alison (from the Dance Crazy Swing and Waltz videos.) Both are friendly and amazing dancers who instruct in an easy-to-understand way. This is the 3-DVD Mastery System, so you’ll start off on Disc 1, which is the Beginner’s lesson. The Bachata is a little complicated, so they start with the Basic Step, break it down slowly, and dance it separate before moving on to dancing with a partner. There are also 3 variations of the Basic: The Tap, the Hip Lift, and The Triplet, which range from easy to more difficult, and you can use whichever Basic variation you’re most comfortable with in any of the patterns they show you. From there, you learn the Basic Step forward, backward, and in place. Each section is broken down in detail, and you get lots of practice in on how to move around the dance floor. Then you get instruction on Partnering & Etiquette, moving with a partner, and using the closed position before moving on to learn the Basic step while rotating. From there, you’ll learn 5 patterns including the Right & Left Turn, Men’s Turns, Follower’s Turn, The Face Loop, and The Continuous Right Turn. Then you get some practice with all of the patterns together, which finishes your Beginner’s instruction. Disc 2 is the Intermediate Lesson and picks up right where the Beginner’s lesson left off. You’ll learn more footwork, stylistic tips, and more patterns to wow with. The first lesson is about connecting with your partner, which is so important in making Bachata look so graceful and fluid. If you’ve seen it danced with Intermediate or Advanced dancers, you know what I’m talking about. I was so amazed when first seeing a video of the dance because these dancers seemed to be able to read each other’s minds, and were moving so fast and fluidly that the change-ups that were happening seemed almost impossible. I have to add that the video I watched wasn’t of a choreographed ballroom dance, but of a couple in a club caught on a cameraphone. It was amazing! So this chapter deals with your connection, feeling the changes in your partner’s body leading you into the moves, and even includes an exercise for this. They then go into teaching patterns 6 through 13. Those are: 6. Unwinding from a turn and The Gancho, 7. Catch & Release, 8. Free Spin, 9. The Cuddle, 10. Swivels, A Cuddle, and A Drop, 11. The Leg Wrap, 12. Club Styling and The Double Turn, and 13. The Bachata Cross-Body Lead. The patterns get progressively harder, and more sensual, which is what the dance is known for. There is as always lots of practice, and the great thing about this being on DVD is that you can repeat any lesson until you have it. Disc 3 is the Advanced lesson and picks up from the Intermediate lesson. They emphasize the partner connection, then go right into patterns 14 through 12. Those are: 14. Ladies Double Turn with Reverse Hammerlock, 15. The Leader’s Hammerlock, 16. Leader’s Turns, Follower’s Swivels, 17. Spanish Arm Position, 18. Consecutive Turns with Spotting, 19. The Enclosed Embrace, and 20. Leg Hooks. They follow with a chapter of Do’s and Don’ts, which cover respecting your partner, their limitations, and your fellow dancers. Overall a great wrap-up of advanced moves. I loved these DVDs, and when I’m ready to learn another dance, I’ll definitely get them from Dance Crazy! –Holly – Amazon Reviewer Product Description Bachata is HOT.
