A single coincidence can change the course of a life! Sam and Jenny, each fatherless because of WWII, met at the age of nine and through the years are inseparable while growing up in a small western New York village of Sugar Creek. Sam, whom Jenny has always thought of as the big brother she never had, was always there for her until the one time she needed him the most. As the world is in turmoil with the Vietnam War, Sam enlists and becomes an interpreter decoding North Vietnamese messages, while Jenny pursues a career as a horticulturalist. While stationed in Okinawa, Sam, knowing Jenny’s love of flowers, takes her cherished letters to a Zen garden hoping to calm his sense of separation and loneliness. There he meets Hinata, a gardener who introduces Sam to the symbolic meaning of garden features, the differences between East and Western symbols and the philosophy behind coincidences. After graduation, Jenny rapidly rises to a level of expertise in the field of ground maintenance. She receives a proposal of marriage while Sam is abroad and turns to him for advice. Sam awakens to the depth of his feelings towards Jenny and hastily writes a letter to her asking her to wait for him until his pending discharge is completed. However, a coincidence occurs, changing the path of Sam and Jenny’s lives. Sam returns from the war to a bitter America where his self-hatred equals a level comparable to the hatred of Americans towards the war. Damaged, Sam struggles alone to regain his self-respect and return to his path of becoming an attorney. A second coincidence occurs with the awareness of Agent Orange and again Sam’s life is put in turmoil. Over twenty-five years later, a third coincidence presents Sam with a chance to once again change the direction of his life. It is a story about trust, love, courage, and hope during a period in American history where hope seemed out of reach and courage was unappreciated.
