Literary Calligraphy “The Road Not Taken” Art Print of Robert Frost poem by Susan Loy

Susan Loy hand-lettered the poem that forms a border of two thin brown lines that wind their way around a background of tan maple seeds, finally breaking off to form the inside circle that surrounds two yellow maple leaves. Loy chose the maple leaf to represent Frost’s yellow wood, painting two species — the common Sugar Maple, Acer saccharum, and the less common Black Sugar Maple or Rock Maple, Acer nigrum. Robert Frost wrote “The Road Not Taken” in 1916, when he was a poet-in-residence at Amherst College: “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back.
