This is a series of books for “Advanced Beginners” (starting at level A2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Language). These are learners who have have already studied basic grammar, but have not yet reached the level where they can fully understand books written for native speakers. With these learners in mind, I have begun adapting well-known German stories with the following changes: – The simple past (Prateritum) has been changed to use the present perfect tense (Perfekt). As the present perfect tense is the tense used almost exclusively in daily use to refer to past events, it is significantly more useful for someone new to the language. – I have simplified the vocabulary in these texts, opting to substitute difficult and rare words for ones that will be more useful in daily life. I have also made an effort to repeat vocabulary words throughout each story, allowing readers to learn unfamiliar words more effectively through repetition.
