“Close Calls and Unforgettables”. In active combat the moment to moment possibility of one’s death or wounding is an ever-present impending threat. A soldier must either accept that as a fact over which except for the exercise of primitive instinct and common sense, he has little or no control. Incredible instances during active combat in World War II when, but for the grace of God or for some inexplicable reason, I narrowly escaped being either killed or severely wounded. In a sense all experiences in military service are unforgettable as are one’s experiences throughout one’s life in general. There are some experiences that leave stronger, deeper impressions than others.
