This book is about missionary labors of Fathers Marquette, Menard and Allouez, in the Lake Superior Region. The first missionary journey was undertaken in 1659, when Father Jacques Marquette set out from St. Ignace with Louis Joliet to explore the country watered by the Mississippi River. They traveled thousands of miles by canoe and on foot to bring Christianity across the Great Lakes region. Translated from the original French manuscripts by Rev. Chrysostom Verwyst. Illustrated with engravings on wood from original sketches made by the missionaries, and with maps and views of the regions explored by them. The first edition, was the first known book published in North America by Europeans.
