Penguin Classics presents the audiobook adaptation of Charles Dicken’s timeless tale, Oliver Twist, read by the actor Alex Jennings.
The story of the orphan Oliver, who runs away from the workhouse only to be taken in by a den of thieves, shocked readers when it was first published. Dickens’s tale of childhood innocence beset by evil depicts the dark criminal underworld of a London peopled by vivid and memorable characters – the arch-villain Fagin, the artful Dodger, the menacing Bill Sikes and the prostitute Nancy. Combining elements of Gothic Romance, the Newgate Novel and popular melodrama, Dickens created an entirely new kind of fiction, scathing in its indictment of a cruel society, and pervaded by an unforgettable sense of threat and mystery.

“It is a world of disappointment: often to the hopes we most cherish, and hopes that do our nature the greatest honour.” Born into a life of impoverishment, orphaned at birth, Oliver Twist begins his life in a workhouse. Apprenticed to Mr. Sowerberry, he flees to London on being beaten. What happens as he meets Jack Dawkins, goes to work with him without knowing the nature of work, and is taken to the police when mistaken for a thief? Follow Oliver Twist as he strives to overcome the miserable conditions of the mid-19th century lower class, and searches for an identity. Centred round the rise of capitalism and industrial revolution, Dickens’ Oliver Twist is a notable example of a social novel. Adapted into numerous art forms, it continues to remain a classic sensation. About the Author Charles Dickens was one of the most popular English writers of all time. This novel provides a basis for literary analysis and discussion of social issues, poverty, and crime in Victorian England.
Oliver is an orphan living on the dangerous London streets with no one but himself to rely on. Fleeing from poverty and hardship, he falls in with a criminal street gang who will not let him go, however hard he tries to escape. One of the most swiftly moving and unified of Charles Dickens’s great novels, Oliver Twist is also famous for its re-creation-through the splendidly realized figures of Fagin, Nancy, the Artful Dodger, and the evil Bill Sikes-of the vast London underworld of pickpockets, thieves, prostitutes, and abandoned children. Victorian critics took Dickens to task for rendering this world in such a compelling, believable way, but readers over the last 150 years have delivered an alternative judgment by making this story of the orphaned Oliver Twist one of its author’s most loved works. This edition reprints the original Everyman’s introduction by G. K. Chesterton and includes twenty-four illustrations by George Cruikshank.
