What do children read before they read books? Words! The phonetic reading cards work just like the classic Montessori material the phonetic object box but with the benefit of a control which allows children to check their own work. Use the photo-only card as flash cards in vocabulary lessons. Later, when children are familiar with the sounds of the letters in our alphabet (not their names), show children how to read the separate word label, match it to the picture, and then check their own work with the labeled cards. This program eases children into independent reading with phonics. Level 1 includes the simplest, truly phonetic words. Level 2 introduces the children to consonant blends like cr and st words that are still completely phonetic. Level 3 includes 9 traditional phonogram that match the Montessori green sandpaper letters and 10 other common phonograms as follows: ai (paint), ar (yarn), ch (chip), ee (tree), er (fern), oa (boat), oo (book), or (corn), sh (ship); a-e (cake), a nasal (can), ck (bucket), ea (leaf), i-e (lime), o-e (cone), oi (coin), oo (moon), ow (owl), and double consonants (bell). (For each phonogram there is one packet with six examples/photos and 18 cards). Level 4 pulls everything together in phonetic words that include more than one common phonogram (from Level 3 only). Once they have progressed through Level 4, children have the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to tackle the non-phonetic half of our language. 34 packets and over 600 cards in the entire program plus a sample lesson plan for teacher/parent reference. Approx. card sizes are as follows: Word Cards (3 2/3 x 1 1/8), Photo Cards (3 2/3 x 3), and Control Cards (3 2/3 x 4 1/3). All photos clearly isolate their subject. All cards are laminated with a heavy 5 mil laminate, have rounded corners, and are packaged in a sturdy reclosable bag for easy storage.
