Sprouts: A Gentle Writing System: Explicit Instruction + Content Driven Strategies

SPROUTS is a gentle writing program, designed to guide students in the process of writing with purpose. It lays a foundation of strong, varied sentences and progresses to well-organized paragraphs. This program is designed for students approximately ages 7-11. It may be spread across several years when beginning with a younger student or may be completed in a year by an older student. Upon completion of this writing program, students will be ready to write multi-paragraph essays and research papers. PART 1 includes explicit instruction on tools used to make interesting sentences- like strong verbs, descriptive adjectives, phrases, and clauses. Grammar basics are taught in the context of writing. PART 2 includes guided writing strategies that support your child as they write about subjects they are already studying or reading. Younger students complete many of the activities orally or collaboratively, while older students are gradually empowered to write on their own. This is a perfect resource for those who use a literature based curriculum or who use a history, geography, or science curriculum. This program is designed to come alongside whatever your child is already learning. This is a clear, step-by-step program. It is open-and-go, without advanced preparation needed; however, it is not scripted. Because the writing is based on whatever you are studying, parents will need to be able to provide guidance to their child. As you become familiar with the routine, your child should be able to become more and more independent.
