Telling It On the Mountain: 52 Days in the Life of an Improbable Missionary

Go tell it on the mountain Over the hills and everywhere Go tell it on the mountain That Jesus Christ is born. I’ve sung this song since I was a child. As an adult, I taught it to countless school children as a music and art teacher. I’ve played it on the piano in rousing arrangements. And then, for four years, I got to live out those words. After our children were grown and married, we had our first grandchild, and it seemed like time to sit back and enjoy the fruits of our labor, God’s call came. At the ages of 52 and 55, we found ourselves selling our business and most of our earthly possessions in preparation for moving to Cuenca, Ecuador. I thought I was ready. I thought I knew what it meant to be a missionary. I thought this was a great way for me to show God just how much I loved Him. But instead, God used that time to show me just how much He loved me – not because of what I had done for Him but because of what He had done for me.
