With the reality-bending power of feldcraft under its control, the grand empire of Ducain has stood strong for centuries. But rot festers within its walls. In the imperial capital of Ducanion, a band of rebels known as the Free Mages desire to seize feldcraft for themselves, growing ever more destructive in their methods. To some, they are heroes. But to Willem Vanderhal–and the rest of Imperial Mage Corps–they are terrorists. So when an attack on the Mage Corps archive leaves the imperial guard at a loss, Willem decides to take matters into his own hands. And the hands of an ancient shadow spirit. Together, they must hunt down the enigmatic leader of the Free Mages, a masked figure known only as ‘the Wanderer,’ and bring his seditious ravings to an end. But the roots of the Free Mages run deep, and sometimes the most powerful forces are the ones that can’t be seen.
