Welcome to VOLUME 1 of our Traditional Chinese Characters TOCFL Series. This workbook is designed for complete Beginner (Pre-A1 Level) foreign language students who want to start learning to write traditional Chinese characters. Here, you’ll practice Chinese writing, while also learning new vocabulary. Our approach focuses on teaching how characters combine to form words, rather than just learning each character in isolation. The vocabulary list in this workbook is derived from content of the 8,000-word database available for free on the official TOCFL website. The list corresponds to the TOCFL vocabulary list, with this workbook containing Pre-A1 Level Words. This book contains: Introduction to Chinese characters, the vocabulary, and traditional vs simplified differences. Stroke order instructions & examples. A vocabulary directory detailing all the words in the workbook (including pinyin and English) Practice pages for the 400 pre-A1 level Chinese vocabulary words. Each word has a line of traceable characters, plus one line of empty space to practice. Why learn traditional characters? Many characters were left untouched by simplification and are thus identical between the traditional and simplified Chinese. Once you master traditional characters, it will be very easy to write in the simplfied version. So why not learn in traditional first? You will impress your friends and family, not to mention the whole Chinese community. If you want to go into international business, it will be very useful to know both traditional and simplified. For example, Hong Kong and Taiwan both use traditonal characters, and both places are large business hubs. Traditional versions of characters shows the enduring historical and cultural value of Hanzi (chinese characters).
