WHERE THE SIDEWEALK ENDS A film by Otto Preminger Dana Andrews stars as Mark Dixon, a corrupt cop, in this gritty noir thriller shot on the rain-slicked streets of New York. Already in trouble for his brutal methods, alienated from his colleagues, he pursues a gang leader with vindictive zeal and accidentally kills a possible murder suspect. His guilt deepens when he falls in love with the dead man’s wife (played with beguiling beauty by Gene Tierney) and her father, an innocent cab driver, finds himself accused of the murder. Dixon finds ultimate redemption at a price. Otto Preminger brings a welcome sympathy and complexity to every character on-screen, from the nervous police informer through to the cocky mobster (Gary Merrill), the exasperated police chief (Karl Malden), and Dixon himself, burdened with self-hatred as the son of a thief, Joseph LaShelle’s photography lends a seedy glamour to the run-down lodging houses, cheap cafs and night-time exteriors. DVD extras include Director’s Biography, Screenwriter’s Biography and original theatrical trailer. USA 1950 black & white Optional hard-of-hearing subtitles 91 minutes Ratio 1.33:1 Region 2 DVD

If you are a dreamer, come in, If you are a dreamer, A wisher, a liar, A hope-er, a pray-er, A magic bean buyer …Come in …for where the sidewalk ends, Shel Silverstein’s world begins. You’ll meet a boy who turns into a TV set, and a girl who eats a whale. The Unicorn and the Bloath live there, and so does Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout who will not take the garbage out. It is a place where you wash your shadow and plant diamond gardens, a place where shoes fly, sisters are auctioned off, and crocodiles go to the dentist. Shel Silverstein’s masterful collection of poems and drawings is at once outrageously funny and profound.

Product description No Description Available. Genre: Childrens Media Format: Compact Disk Rating: Release Date: 3-OCT-2000 Amazon.com If you’ve heard Shel Silverstein’s bawdy Freakin’ at the Freakers Ball, your notion of the man who wrote Where the Sidewalk Ends might’ve been skewered. Silverstein was nothing if not a tad twisted. But his twists and turns in world of children’s arts were well considered and infectiously charming. When he recorded poems and rhymes from Sidewalk, the book was nearly a decade old. But he brought the words to life, albeit a funky, sometimes nasally delivered, sometimes abruptly jolted life. Silverstein knew that his changes in voice pitch, his quickly dashed mixes of spare guitar and pinched singsong delivery, and, most of all, his rhythmically fetching words were ideal for hearing. Sidewalk, which took home a 1984 Grammy for best children’s album, still stands boldly above (or at least apart from) so much of what’s recorded for kids. One should expect nothing less than pretzeled genius from the guy who wrote such pop hits as “The Unicorn,” “A Boy Named Sue,” and “On the Cover of Rolling Stone.” And that’s what comes through on this expanded Sidewalk, with its 11 newly added snippets (including “Hector the Collector,” “Hungry Mungry,” and “If I Had a Brontosaurus”). If it’s a rhyme you’re after, look no further. –Andrew Bartlett
