If ever there was room on one’s shelves for a single, comprehensive reference work for learning about the world of opera from the ground up, then this Naxos package, ‘The A to Z of Opera’ by Keith Anderson is one to strongly consider. Its two CDs, 1000+ pg. subject-divided book and additional online resources will take you from novice to expert appreciator of this glorious, centuries-old art form. The book’s author Keith Anderson, born in England in 1929, was educated and degreed at Lancing College, later at Wadham College and London University, followed by a further degree study in Music at Durham. After a brief period working overseas, he returned to Britain in 1961 and resumed musical studies, in particular with Alexandre Moskowsky of the famed Hungarian Quartet. From 1966-1973 he was lecturer in Music at a college of education for mature students in Leeds while continuing work as a freelance violinist and Open University tutor and lecturer. In 1973 he moved to the Chinese University of Hong Kong followed by a number of years teaching in Hong Kong, principally at the Conservatory, the Academy for Performing Arts and the Hong Kong Baptist University, coupled with practical work as a player and conductor, and with an equally busy career as a writer, broadcaster and editor. He has served as editor for Naxos, Marco Polo and associated labels of HNH Int’l since the foundation of the company.
