Amazon.com The maturation and coming of age of a young woman is a difficult and often confusing journey for any young girl, but the road for Anne Shirley (Kim Braden), an orphan taken in as a child by Marilla Cuthbert (Barbara Hamilton) and her deceased brother Matthew, is littered with unique challenges that test her own beliefs, talents, dreams, and sense of self-worth. Based on the “Anne of Avonlea” and “Anne of the Island” children’s books by L.M. Montgomery, this 6-episode, 5-hour 1975 BBC mini-series (not the popular PBS version directed by Kevin Sullivan and starring Megan Follows) opens with a bright and ambitious Anne as she prepares to begin teaching in the local school and actively serves as an advocate and secretary on the newly formed Village Improvement Society in Avonlea. A highly principled young woman, Anne’s idealistic resolves are quickly tested as is her limited knowledge of small town politics. The death of a neighbor leads Anne and Marilla to welcome two young orphans into their household, resulting in Anne’s selflessly setting aside her dreams of attending college. Formal schooling aside, Anne’s education regarding marriage, politics, and human nature continues right there in Avonlea. Eventually, Anne’s dreams of attending college are realized and she quickly discovers how much she still has to learn about friendship, love, and self-sufficiency. This BBC production features convincing talent and a sense of intimacy that is reinforced by a sparseness of set and music and a tendency toward up-close photography. This classic audiobook fosters literacy and explores themes of personal growth, responsibility, and social skills.

In the first sequel to Anne of Green Gables, Lucy Montgomery’s feisty red-headed heroine is now 16 and a school teacher in the small village of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island. Although older, she isn’t necessarily wiser, and she hasn’t outgrown her mischievous antics. She learns how complicated life can be when she takes two new orphans at Green Gables under her wings, meddles in someone else’s love life, and learns about romance herself when she encounters the “odd behavior” of a very handsome man, Gilbert Blythe.

Anne of Avonlea is a classic children’s novel published in 1909 by Lucy Maud Montgomery, sequel to the widely beloved Anne of Green Gables. It follows the adventures of Anne Shirley, a young orphan girl who is adopted by a family on Prince Edward Island, Canada. As she grows up, Anne faces many challenges, including adjusting to life in a new home, handling the responsibilities of adulthood, and learning to understand her own emotions. Along the way, she makes lifelong friendships, falls in love, and discovers the joys and pains of growing up. Anne of Avonlea is a timeless story of family, friendship, and finding one’s place in the world. Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942) was a Canadian author best known for her children’s novel Anne of Green Gables. Montgomery wrote over 20 novels, 500 short stories, 500 poems and numerous essays. She was born in Clifton, Prince Edward Island, and was an avid reader, writing her first poem at the age of 10. Montgomery attended Prince of Wales College, where she studied literature, and later taught school in various places before returning to Prince Edward Island to settle down. She wrote her first novel, Anne of Green Gables in 1908, and it soon became a bestseller. Montgomery wrote several sequels to the novel, as well as other books set in Prince Edward Island. Montgomery was an advocate for women’s rights and education and was active in the temperance movement, which sought to end the sale of alcohol. Her writing was influenced by her Christian faith, as well as her love for the landscape of Prince Edward Island. Montgomery’s works remain popular today, and her life has been the subject of numerous biographies and films. She was inducted into the Canadian Literary Hall of Fame in 1981, and her home in Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, is now a National Historic Site.
