Spirogyra sp. Collected from our ponds. Spirogyra are a genus of filamentous green algae also known as pond silk. The genus is named for the unusual spiral shaped chloroplast. Each culture contains enough material for a class of 30 students. This culture requires a high light level of 200 to 400 foot-candles of fluorescent light 18 to 24 from the culture. Optimal medium: Spirogyra Soil-Water. Optimum growth temperature: 22 C. Note: Collected algae are not necessarily free of unidentified organisms.
Features
- LIVING FILAMENTOUS GREEN ALGAE – Spirogyra sp., commonly known as “”pond silk,”” forms long, thread-like chains that are ideal for observing algal cell structures.
- UNUSUAL CHLOROPLAST STRUCTURE – Named for its distinct spiral-shaped chloroplasts, Spirogyra provides an excellent model for studying plant cell organelles and photosynthesis.
- IDEAL FOR CLASSROOM MICROSCOPY – A fascinating specimen for microscopic examination, demonstrating cell structure, reproduction, and movement in algae.
- SUFFICIENT FOR A CLASS OF 30 – Each culture contains enough material to support a full class, making it ideal for group activities and laboratory experiments.
