Handwriting and counting are two skills that seem effortless as adults, but when broken down they take a surprising amount of foundational pieces to execute. Handwriting takes visual perception, spatial reasoning, fine motor skills, core strength to stabilize, visual scanning, and integration of all of these to work together. Counting requires the understanding of multiple concepts. Stable order is being able to to say and recognize the number names and forms in sequential order, one to one correspondence is the concept that each object equals one count, and cardinality means that the last number spoken represents the quantity in the set. Children develop these skills through exposure and practice. In the preschool years some children may develop them before others. In this case, incorporating the concepts into play without expectation of performance is the best way to move the development needle in the right direction. This book is designed to be playful and provide practice and exposure through a theme that children love to use in imaginative play, restaraunts. My hope is that this book inspires imaginative play, the fertile ground where learning grows. Happy tiny doodling!
