A sedimentary rock that is largely composed of the minerals calcite and aragonite, it also contains the skeletal fragments of marine organisms. Often, it holds varying quantities of silica, clay, silt and sand, in addition to the other components. Over time some of the microfossils contained within fossiliferous limestone, such as diatom shells, may eventually convert to opal or chert. Limestone in general has found common usage in architecture, particularly in Europe and North America, with many world landmarks also being constructed of the stone. Other uses for limestone include being crushed and used as the solid base for asphalt concrete roads, as an additive white pigment and cheap filler for plastics, tiles, paint, and others. It is also found in numerous medicines and cosmetics used in our daily lives. Origin: TX
