This amazing sound effect is now part of every percussionist’s kitbag. The only whistle that sings on, even when the blowing has stopped. The ACME 147 Siren Whistle creates a real whoosh of sound using an internal metal fan blade mechanism that spins when the whistle is blown. The faster the whistle is blown, the faster the fan blade moves and the higher the pitch the instrument creates. Conversely, the slower the whistle is blown, the lower the pitch. A wonderful sound effect, a useful and unusual warning signal for small boats and general use. The ACME Siren is a musical instrument used in concert bands for comic effect. Often used in cartoons, it produces the stylized sound of a police siren. It is one of the few aerophones in the percussion section of an orchestra. The Acme No. 147 Siren Whistle began life as the ‘Cyclists Road Clearer’ in the 1880s. Acme developed and patented the Acme siren in 1895. The 147 Siren was first used in “Steamboat Willie” (1928) to create the unforgettable cartoon sound effect and is frequently associated with cartoon characters’ falling, running fast or slipping. The whistle is easily taken apart for cleaning. Ensure the whistle is clean and dry before storage. Clean with warm water. Store out of direct sunlight.
