Death does not have to be scary. Everyone dies just like everyone poops. Poetry can make even the most frightening things seem romantic. My vision for this book is simple. There’s beauty all around us. Fridge-worthy art. Simplicity of a child, complexity of a philosopher. Open as many questions as possible. Believe in something, even if it’s the chair under you holding you up from the ground. After searching for an illustrator, I realized that I have been doing crayon art for years and that that would be an accessible thing for a child. I sought to capture the innocence of a child who is deeply aware of death. The poem itself is something a child could write, off-set with the adult language of The Prayer of St. Francis. I don’t believe in talking down to children. Vocabulary Is for everyone. Even if you’re illiterate you can enjoy poetry vicariously. This book is meant to be spoken, A wish for being. Inspired by the children’s classic Life Doesn’t Frighten Me At All by Maya Angelou with artwork by Basquiat.
