After the cor anglais had found its place in Italian opera orchestras at the beginning of the 19th century, more and more composers in the rest of Europe also began to employ the cor anglaiss sonorous and mournful sound in their orchestras. One of the first was Hector Berlioz who, in the famous pastoral scene of his Symphonie fantastique, had the cor anglais appear as a soloist. The work was first performed in Paris in 1830. Franz Liszt happened to be in the audience and was deeply impressed by the new music of his fellow composer and friend. Liszt started to use the cor anglais in his works, as did Berliozs other important friend, Richard Wagner. In 1843, The Flying Dutchman premiered in Dresden. This work features a beautiful cor anglais solo in the overture. Many other cor anglais parts followed in Wagners operas.
