Organic Chemistry Lab Techniques Explained in Layman’s Terms: A Conversational, High-Yield Guide for First Semester Topics

Students oftentimes spend $50-$100 for textbooks that, while very comprehensive, contain technical jargon and advanced details that sometimes cause students to struggle with gaining traction in building a strong foundational intuition of the subject. Recognizing that textbooks are necessarily comprehensive, coupling their highly advanced format with easily digestible, conversational language can help serve as a useful supplemental tool. That said, this is meant to be a vehicle used to gain higher yields on the material provided by a standard textbook, as the reader will be walked through a deliberately structured learning process which involves building a high-level understanding of how the techniques work before diving deeper into the more nitty gritty details. Explanations of the lab techniques will leverage analogies, simple language, and figures to help facilitate the building of a strong foundation of understanding, making the reader’s transition to more advanced contexts (i.e., textbook learning) more manageable. Note, this is NOT a comprehensive replacement to a textbook and thus it is not designed for experts of the subject matter.

-NOT include a walk-through of NMR, IR, GC spectra interpretation
-NOT include example calculations for topics such as azeotropes, eutectics, mathematical proof of extraction efficiencies, etc.
