This audiobook provides a classic philosophical and theological text for study in literature, philosophy, or religious studies courses.

Written by G. K. Chesterton, Orthodoxy addresses foremost one main problem: How can we contrive to be at once astonished at the world and yet at home in it? Chesterton writes, “I wish to set forth my faith as particularly answering this double spiritual need, the need for that mixture of the familiar and the unfamiliar which Christendom has rightly named romance.” Chesterton likens orthodox Christianity to a man who set out in a boat from England and was quite excited to land on an island only to soon discover he had, in fact, landed on England. “I am the man who with the utmost daring discovered what had been discovered before.” This is Chesterton’s autobiography. It is his story of finding the familiar and unfamiliar in Christianity. It is his hunt for the gorgon or griffin and in the end discovers a rhinoceros and then takes pleasure in the fact that a rhinoceros exists but looks as if it oughtn’t. In Orthodoxy, Chesterton argues that people in Western society need a life of “practical romance, the combination of something that is strange with something that is secure. We need so to view the world as to combine an idea of wonder and an idea of welcome.” Drawing on such figures as Fra Angelico, George Bernard Shaw, and St. Paul to make his points, Chesterton argues that submission to ecclesiastical authority is the way to achieve a good and balanced life.

This classic work of apologetics fosters advanced reading comprehension, critical analysis, and understanding of philosophical arguments.

Lauded as a classic of Christian apologetics, G.K. Chesterton’s Orthodoxy recounts his personal journey from agnosticism to the faith. Writing from within a culture marked by materialism and suspicion of the supernatural, Chesterton argues for coming to know the divine storyteller behind the great story of life, insisting that only the Christian claim can fundamentally satisfy the longings of the human heart. Orthodoxy aims to rediscover the faith as startling, romantic, and new, embracing the radical paradoxes of Christianity rather than settling for a bland middle ground. With his characteristic wit and wisdom, Chesterton invites readers into his own story of falling in love with God.

This book provides a resource for the study of Christian theology, history, and philosophy.

Orthodoxy by G.K. Chesterton is one of the most influential books in Christian apologetics. Originally published in 1908, Orthodoxy offers an engaging and vibrant defense of Christian orthodoxy from a uniquely Chestertonian perspective. In the book, Chesterton argues that the only true Christianity is the one that has been traditionally accepted by the Church over the centuries. He presents a creative and imaginative case for orthodoxy, challenging the modern conceptions of Christianity as a “cold”, “dead”, or “unrealistic” religion. He defends the orthodox faith as a vibrant and dynamic system that can be embraced with passion and joy. Chesterton draws on ancient Christian theology and philosophy to develop his arguments, as well as personal experience and a quirky wit. He tackles topics ranging from the nature of faith and the existence of God to the problem of evil and the concept of free will. He also examines the importance of tradition and the need for humility in the face of mystery. Ultimately, Chesterton’s purpose in writing Orthodoxy was to demonstrate that Christianity is still a living and vibrant faith, and that its ancient doctrines still hold relevance for modern believers. He hoped to encourage readers to explore the mysteries of their faith with a sense of awe and wonder, and to accept the doctrines of the Church without fear or reservation.
