These gourds are painted by artisans in Mexico.The designs are carved on the gourd without sketching creating many intricate designs. Our designs vary because of the varying creativity of each artist. Gourd carving is one of the oldest art forms in Mexico and dates back to 2,500 BC. *000062*

Features

• After the gourds are harvested, the artisan removes the outer green skin with a dull knife, exposing the lighter brown color underneath. Then the gourds are cleaned and dried in the hot Peruvian sun
• Hand carved and hand painted with seeds that rattle inside
• Slender gourds are carved and transformed into maraca after they are hollowed out and filled with metallic rattling pieces
• Sizes vary, but each Maraca is about 7″-10″ long
• Hand made in Mexico by artisans under fair trade standards
