THE PLANTS AND TREES ARE NOW DORMANT Potted Elderberry plant. Sambucus canadensis We ship in small containers, about 18oz plastic cups. This helps greatly to almost eliminate transplant shock. Many species of trees do not have a good survival rate when transplanted bare-root. This also allows you to plant your trees faster. These trees have been acclimated to the hot sun, but shouldn’t be placed immediately into the sun again when received. Just slide out of container or cut container and plant. Make sure to water 2-3 times a week for the first year or so. Elderberry (Sambucus) is a large bush or shrub that is native to the U.S. and Europe. The bush produces bluish-black fruit in bunches of little berries that are used in wines, juices, jellies and jams. The berries themselves are quite bitter and somewhat bland, so they are seldom eaten by themselves. Growing elderberries is easy for anyone and everyone. They can tolerate different conditions like soil that is in poor condition or soil that is too wet. Elderberries are surprisingly heat and drought tolerant and do best in full sun. When planting elderberry bushes, you should note that the berries will grow on the bushes the first year you plant them. Just remember that the berries will do better the second year. Elderberry planting is done best in well-drained loamy soil. Sandy soils should be improved by adding a few inches of organic matter. When elderberry planting, they do better with other elderberries for cross-pollination. We have sold thousands of these on Etsy and Amazon and show almost five stars on both sites. *Due to the Japanese Beetle Quarantine, all orders will be shipped bare-root to: AZ, CA, ID, MT, NE, NV, OR, UT, WA, unless buyer is willing to pay the $5 Phytosanitary Certification Fee.
