Young Authors is an initiative directed by writing teacher, Sheila Rowe, as a way to promote curiosity and passion for writing. The club engages students in creative collaboration and allows authors to take risks, build confidence and find their voice. Above all, the program gives students a safe place to express themselves. Writing often becomes a tool to cope, heal, and bond with the community. Students write about a variety of topics from divorce and anxiety to love and personal triumph. Students learn that their voice matters and that sharing life experiences helps each of us to learn and to be a stronger individual. While the club utilizes academic lessons to hone writing skills, it also provides students with a connection between academia and the real world. Connecting those two realms broadens our community dialogue and creates a culture that allows students to take risks and apply classroom skills in a more meaningful context. The Young Authors Project brings in a large network of teachers and mentors. Authors from across Arizona meet with students to discuss the writing craft and conduct workshops at all grade levels at Discovery School. Pulse is the tenth book published by Young Authors.
