• 100% organic formulation with a non-toxic dehydrated porcine blood as the main nitrogen source to drive reproduction of bacteria and fungi within the substrate. The microbes will colonize the bales quickly and as they metabolize and decompose the straw the interior of the bale will become compost or early-stage soil. The BaleBuster is considered completely organic and the resulting plants grown will be organic.
• Prepares five bales for planting in 18 days. Allow extra time if the weather during the application period is cool, espcially if colder than 45 degrees. The bacteria growth is limited in colder temperatures and that will slow the process. It is helpful to use something to make holes in the bale to help the BaleBuster more easily get deeper into the bale. Do not try to use an excessive amount of water to flush the material in.
• The original and detailed book by Karsten included and contains a great deal of information that will answer most questions that may come up during the conditioning process or with setting up your garden. Lots of tips and tricks that he learned over his many years spent developing the STRAW BALE GARDENS method. The book is easy to read and contains lots of illustrations and charts to make it a great reference whenever guidance is needed.
• Includes fungi and bacterial spores to inoculate the bales. Once the BaleBuster is introduced on the surface and a quick spray of water (1 gallon per day max) the spores in the BaleBuster will activate and begin to colonize the bale. The objective is to encourage the bacteria and fungal spores to quickly replicate and grow until they completely colonize the bale. They will then work on metabolizing the material and leave behind a beautiful compost filled with nutrients for gowing your garden.
• Derived from all natural sources. Avoid using any pesticides or herbicides on the bales or the emerging plants in order to maintain a fully organic environment for vegetable, herb or flower production. . BaleBuster is not harmful to pets, even though dogs or other carnivorous animals may be attracted to the smell and may try to consume or lick the material from the bales. This will not harm them but of course it should be avoided in order to allow the full amount to work on the bales.
• While the STRAW BALE GARDEN method is well tested and loved by all who swear by it, many of whom will tell you they would never grow a garden any other way, once they try this method, there is one factor that should be well understood before purchasing this ORGANIC option. It will likely have a pretty nasty odor for a couple of weeks. This is to be expected as the material is derived from animal blood, and it can smell unpleasant as it decomposes.
• BaleBuster is completely safe to use for both humans and pets, but to avoid pets or carnivorous wildlife from trying to eat the BaleBuster it can be beneficial to make holes in the bales and try to work most of the material down into the bales. This helps speed the breakdown of the material and prevents some of the odor and the neighbors dog from eating it.
• Simple to apply with a detailed daily step-by-step instruction sheet included. BaleBuster should be used at a 50% rate of the typical organic agents we recommend, becasue it works much better than other options.
• DO NOT OVERWATER the bales after applying the BaleBuster. Use only one gallon each day during the application process. If you are spraying with a hose, just limit each application to 30 seconds of spray on the bales. If you overwater it can slow the decomposition and bacteria growth inside the bales. We just need them slightly moist not soaking wet!
