Janet Mort PhD developed this Teacher’s Resource Manual so that teachers have an up-to-date manual that defines the skills young children require to become literate. It provides instructions for assessing the skills in simple and informal ways that are consistent with the latest research on the science of literacy.Part One of each section in the Manual describes the relevant research; defines what children need to know in general terms; identifies why the skill set is important; and provides a list of skills that need to be assessed.Part Two of each section provides skill assessment instructions including the purpose of the assessment; the achievement indicators; recommended procedures; and examples the teacher can use to conduct the assessment.
