Where IS that Vowel? provides hundreds of single-syllabled words containing twenty-four vowel spellings: short and long sounding vowels, modified vowels, long and short oo sounds, aw, au, al, ou, ow, oi and oy. The words are arranged in a building-block format adding consonant combinations to the short vowel initially, then following the progression listed above. Vowel diacritics from Webster’s New International Dictionary’s second edition are compared to their third and current edition. This section of the book is followed by a list of uncommonly used words, or those listed as obsolete now, for use with students having a substantial sight vocabulary; it forces them to utilize the phonetic principles to pronounce the word correctly. The second section of the book combines the single syllables into compound words. The compounds were taken from The American Heritage Children’s Dictionary. The compounds introduce the student to elongated words, yet don’t require the introduction of syllabication. The third section contains partial lists from Fix the Roots up front with Prefixes. This soon-to-be-released book is a continuation of this book utilizing the current words with prefixes of one syllable. Again, adding one concept at a time without getting into syllabication accentuation rules. Definitions are provided as well as their parts of speech. Usage exercises are provided.
