A metamorphic rock, marble is made up of recrystallized carbonate minerals like limestone, calcite, and dolomite, which is where the metamorphosis aspect comes in. It can be foliated, that is to say there are multiple and discernible layers to it, or non-foliated. When it is pure white, that is because the metamorphosis involved extremely pure, or silicate poor, limestone or dolomite. The differing colors, and the appearance of swirls and veins, are caused by mineral impurities like clay, silt, sand, and iron oxides. A cultural symbol and a sign of refined taste, marble has found, and continues to find, extensive use throughout history as both a means to express art, in particular sculptures, and as a building material.
